Before Betsy DeVos’ appointment President Trump as the Secretary of Education, she and her spouse, Dick DeVos, were in the limelight for their huge donations and were famous in Michigan.
Recently, before Betsy was confirmed as the Secretary of Education, the couple decided to lift the veil on the millions of dollars donated by their foundation. Betsy and Dick are the co-founders of the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation that has been involved in several charitable ventures. For instance, in 2015, the foundation donated approximately 11.6 million to other philanthropic organizations. The figure was twice the amount that the couple had given out for political and elections reasons.
Richard DeVos and his children are among the most generous family in the US and Forbes ranks them at number 24 in the country. They donated a total of one hundred and four million dollars in 2015. From my research, I learned that Betsy and Dick both hail from philanthropic families with an extensive history of donations and this could explain why both were very passionate about giving back to their communities.
It is believed that the DeVoses have given out nearly 1.33 billion dollars which is approximately 25% of their entire wealth. Among the several sectors that the couple donated to, I discovered that education was their top priority with donations of $ 3 million awarded to the education sector in 2015. Betsy believes that all children had the right to education not bound by their ZIP codes and her contributions have facilitated many of these kids to achieve this. Among the beneficiaries of the DeVoses contributions include Northwood University, Rehoboth Christian School, Ferris State University, and Compass College of Cinematic Arts. Other areas that the DeVoses contributed to include $2.4 million to arts and culture, $1.8 million to civic community, $1.5 million to leadership and development, 1.3 million to public policy, $618,00 to health and human services, and $488,250 to churches.
